How to revise for Year 12 exams (what the evidence actually says)

Six revision rules with real research behind them — retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving and more — for QCE, VCE, HSC and every other Australian Year 12 exam.

Most revision advice is folklore. This isn't.

Ask ten people how to revise and you'll hear the same things: re-read your notes, highlight the important bits, make a pretty summary, put in the hours. The trouble is that when researchers actually test these techniques, the popular ones keep losing to a small set of less comfortable ones.

This guide covers six rules with replicated evidence behind them. They apply whether you sit QCE external assessments in Queensland, VCE exams in Victoria, the HSC in New South Wales, or any other Australian senior exam. The exam formats differ; your memory doesn't.

One honest note before we start: no technique guarantees a result. What the research gives you is better odds per hour of study. That's worth having, because your hours are finite.

Why re-reading feels productive but isn't

Re-reading and highlighting feel good because they create fluency: the material looks familiar, so your brain files it as known. But recognising something on a page is a different skill from producing it in an exam room with the page gone.

Across hundreds of experiments, practice testing reliably outperforms restudying the same material [3]. The effect is one of the most robust findings in learning science. If your revision consists mostly of reading things again, the first change to make is also the biggest one.

Rule 1: Test yourself before you check

Retrieval practice means pulling the answer from memory before you look at it. Close the notes and write what you remember. Answer the past-paper question before opening the solutions. Say the definition out loud before flipping the flashcard.

The act of retrieving strengthens the memory in a way that re-exposure doesn't [3]. It also does something quieter and just as valuable: it shows you what you actually don't know, while there's still time to fix it.

Rule 2: Space it out, and let the gaps grow

Forgetting follows a power curve: steep at first, then flattening [1]. A fact you learned this morning is fragile tonight; a fact you've successfully recalled five times over three weeks is durable. That's why one review tomorrow is worth more than three reviews tonight.

How far apart should reviews be? The research answer is that the best gap scales with how long you need to remember [2]. Exams months away reward longer gaps between reviews; an exam in a fortnight rewards shorter ones. Practically: start revision earlier than feels necessary, review each topic several times with growing gaps, and tighten the gaps as the exam approaches.

Rule 3: Mix topics that are easy to confuse

Blocked practice (twenty questions on the same topic in a row) feels smooth, because by question three you know what kind of answer is expected. Interleaved practice (mixing related topics so consecutive questions need different approaches) feels harder and produces better exam performance.

The benefit comes from discrimination: mixing forces you to work out which method or concept a question calls for, which is exactly the judgement an exam demands [4]. Interleave topics that are genuinely confusable with each other. Mixing unrelated subjects doesn't earn the effect.

Rule 4: Right once is not the same as known

Getting a question correct today tells you less than it feels like it does. The stronger standard is relearning to criterion: when you get something wrong, keep retrieving it until you get it right, then bring it back over the following days until it's cheap to answer [5].

The encouraging part of that research is how fast relearning gets. A concept that took twenty minutes to learn the first time takes moments to refresh the third time. The reviews you're tempted to skip are usually the cheapest study you'll ever do.

Rule 5: Explain it, and rate your confidence

Two small habits multiply the value of every question you do. First, self-explanation: after answering, say why that's the answer in your own words. Prompted self-explanation has a solid evidence base of its own [6].

Second, calibration: before checking a solution, note whether you were sure, unsure or guessing. The most dangerous gaps in your knowledge are the ones you're confident about and wrong on, and this is the only cheap way to find them before the exam does.

Rule 6: Practise the exam, not just the content

Knowing the content and performing in an exam are different skills. Timed conditions, no notes, unfamiliar question order, the pressure of a running clock: these are trainable, and past papers are the training ground.

Work up a ladder: open-book practice while a topic is new, closed-book once it's settled, timed full papers in the final stretch. Mark your own work against the official marking guidance where your exam authority publishes it. Self-marking teaches you how marks are actually earned, which changes how you write answers.

Putting it together: a working week

A revision structure that follows the evidence looks something like this:

  • Short daily sessions beat weekend binges. Five 40-minute sessions spread across a week out-earn one four-hour block, because spacing is doing work for you between sessions.
  • Start each session by retrieving: a few flashcards or a brain dump of yesterday's topic, before anything new.
  • Clear reviews that are due before adding new material.
  • Spend the largest share of time on your weakest topics, not your favourites. It's less pleasant and more valuable.
  • Add one timed paper a week in the last month, under real conditions, marked honestly.

And the boring essentials still apply: sleep consolidates memory, and a plan you can actually sustain beats a heroic one you abandon in week two.

A note on your state's exams

Everything above is about memory, so it transfers across systems: QCE external assessments, VCE exams, the HSC, SACE, WACE and the rest.
