Which past papers are in the question bank?
The QCAA publishes each year's external assessment papers and marking guides. The question bank is built from the 2021–2025 papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the current syllabus subject matter, so out-of-scope items from the superseded syllabus are not scheduled.

Paper 1 Section 2, loans and recurrence relations

A $12,000 loan charges interest at 6% per annum, compounded monthly, and is repaid with $400 at the end of each month. Write a recurrence relation for the balance Aₙ after n repayments, and find the balance after two repayments.

- A₀ = 12,000, Aₙ₊₁ = 1.005 Aₙ − 400 (1 mark).
- A₁ = 1.005 × 12,000 − 400 = 11,660 (1 mark).
- A₂ = 1.005 × 11,660 − 400 = 11,318.30, so the balance is $11,318.30 (1 mark).

The verbs that carry the marks in General Mathematics
Read the verb before the content. Across the 2021–2025 QCAA papers, 89% of short-response and extended items open with one of the QCAA’s cognitive verbs, and in General Mathematics the marks cluster around a handful of them. “determine” alone heads 41 items. The verb sets the shape of the answer; the marks beside it set the depth.

What is the difference between Paper 1 and Paper 2?
The shape has been identical every year: Paper 1 (57 marks) holds the simple-familiar questions, and Paper 2 (38 marks) holds the complex-familiar and complex-unfamiliar ones — the multi-step, less-scaffolded items that decide the top grades. Each question in the bank is tagged by paper, so you can practise the Paper 2 style once the fundamentals are secure.
